Absorb yourself in history with a becak ride through the old city. Historically, Solo has been a center of power in Central Java. In 1745 the Mataram court was transferred here from Kota Gede, and, since then, the city has built on its reputation as a cultural hub. From Solonese dance, wayang puppetry through to hand-crafted batik Solo remains a city that prides itself on its artistic traditions of elegance and refinement.

Today, Solo is part of the province of Central Java. With a population of over 550,000 people, Solo is a densely populated city. But while people may live close together there are no high rise buildings, so this city has a community atmosphere that is difficult to find in any other city in Indonesia.

Get Around
The handiest way to get around Solo is by becak. The compact size of the city means walking is an option however the streets are crowded and noisy and not well paved.Bicycles are a good option for those who are willing to brave the traffic and can be rented from tourist offices in town. For a more traditional experience, try renting a horse-drawn carriage.Taxis are available though they can be difficult to find away from the main tourist areas. Rental cars are available for hire and can be organized through some of the bigger hotels in Solo.

Get There
Solo has a large airport, the Surakarta-Adi Sumarmo Wiryokusumo International Airport, which has daily flights traveling from most major cities throughout Indonesia. International flights also fly from here to Malaysia and Singapore. AirAsia flies from Kuala Lumpur to Solo and SilkAir from Singapore.

From Yogyakarta, you can travel to Solo by express minibus which takes around one hour. The cheaper but more crowded public buses also travel by this route. Night buses travel from Jakarta to Solo and take around 12 hours. 

The train goes regularly between Solo and Jakarta and the trip takes between 11-12 hours. The train continues to Surabaya. Domestic airlines that fly in and out of Solo include Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, and Sriwijaya Air.

Going to Keraton Surakarta is a must! This is the Palace of Solo Sunanate, full of history and antique collection. It is a nice Solo Indonesia places of interest and the environment is very relaxing moreover during weekdays.

Visit Pura Mangkunegaran (Mangkunegara Palace)
As there are two kingdoms in Solo area, after visit Keraton Surakarta you need to visit Mangkunegara Palace. Though smaller than Keraton Surakarta, Mangkunegara also has interesting history to follow.

WHAT TO DO & SEE IN SOLO

  • See the White Buffaloes

When you are in the area of the palace, you shouldn’t miss to see the white buffaloes. For Javanese this white buffalo is sacred. There is even a local tradition that involves the white buffaloes, where in the first of Suro (Javanese calendar), a parade is held for them at midnight.

Solo has some unique food you must try such as Buntel Satay, Nasi Liwet, and the icon of Solo is Serabi Solo. Many tourists, domestic and foreign, are in line to get the special Serabi of Solo. Try also other street food with cheaper price.

WHERE TO GO NEARBY SOLO

Tawangmangu – Located 40 kms east of Solo, this recreational resort offers fresh weather, scenic views, swimming pools, bungalow style hotels and restaurants. It lies on the slopes of Mt. Lawu, at an elevation of 1,300 m above sea level. Other features include nearby temples, a national park and the 40 m high waterfall of Grojogan Sewu.

Cetho Temple – located in western slope of Mt. Lawu, It is located in hill 1400 m from the sea level. Ceto temple site of 13 stages, from the lower places to higher places ar similar to Hinduism temple

Chasing Sunset in Cengklik – Cengklik Reservoir in Boyolali regency is the best place for chasing sunset. The atmosphere is very calm and you can enjoy the sunset while sit on the warm boat. Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu become its backdrop, a perfect panorama to see.

Sukuh Temple – the pyramid “Inca” looklike decorated with wayang stone carvings of Hindu origin, and erotic symbols. The temple is located only 34 km from Solo.

Sangiran Museum – For those who like history of the world should come to Sangiran Museum. In this museum you can see the fosils of some of the first known human ancestors, Pithecanthropus erectus, the Java Man. There are also the fossils of Megantropus palaeo, Homo erectus, and many more to see.

Jumog Waterfall – is quite famous as one of Solo Indonesia attractions. The heavy waterfall has romantic lush green environment, one of the best to see during the trip in Solo. The water is cold coming from Mount Lawu spring.

Prambanan Temple – the most magnificent and beautiful Hindu temple in Indonesia.

Yogyakarta – Yogyakarta is one of the supreme cultural centers of Java. Must visit place in Java.
